Planning, regulations and timings
Planning permission
Most roof-mounted solar on houses is permitted development if panels don't project more than 200 mm from the roof slope. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area properties can need consent — we check at survey.
Grid connection
Your installer notifies the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). Larger systems need approval before they're connected.
MCS certification
Heat pumps need an MCS-certified installation for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and solar or batteries need one for Smart Export Guarantee payments. Ask us for the MCS details for your installation — every accreditation we display links to its public register.

How much do solar panels cost?

Do I need a battery with solar panels?
No, but a battery lets you use more of your own solar power in the evening instead of exporting it. A home battery (5–10 kWh) costs £3,500–£7,000.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
Payment from an energy supplier for the electricity you export, at that supplier's tariff per kWh. You need an MCS-certified solar or battery installation to qualify.
Are there grants for solar panels?
There's no national solar grant for most homes, but 0% VAT applies until 31 March 2027. Low-income households may be eligible for the Warm Homes: Local Grant through their council, and Warm Homes Plan loans are expected — eligibility depends on your circumstances.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
Usually not on a house, if the panels sit within 200 mm of the roof slope. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation areas can need consent.
