Planning, regulations and timings
Room-by-room heat loss survey
An MCS heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation (BS EN 12831) to size the heat pump and every radiator. Our heat loss survey costs £250–£650 depending on property size, and the fee is credited against your installation if you go ahead within 90 days.
Planning permission
Most heat pumps on houses are permitted development, subject to size, siting and noise limits. Flats, listed buildings and some conservation areas can need consent — we check at survey.
Outdoor unit and cylinder
You'll need space outside for the unit and, in most homes, inside for a hot water cylinder. We plan both at survey.

Annual servicing
Every installation can go on an annual service plan, so it keeps running efficiently and stays within any manufacturer servicing conditions. Plans and prices are confirmed on request.

Do air source heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes. They extract heat from the air well below freezing; a heat pump designed from a proper heat loss survey is sized for the coldest days.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Usually on the ground or a wall at the side or rear of the house, within planning limits on siting and noise. We agree the position at survey.
Do I need a hot water cylinder?
In most homes, yes — a heat pump heats stored hot water rather than heating it on demand like a combi boiler.
