Overview
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air or the ground and moves it into your home, replacing a gas, oil or electric boiler. Designed properly, it heats the whole house and your hot water at a steady, comfortable temperature.
Everything starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey, which MCS requires. With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, eligible homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump.

Good to know
An MCS heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation (BS EN 12831) to size the heat pump and every radiator. Our heat loss survey costs £250–£650 depending on property size, and the fee is credited against your installation if you go ahead within 90 days.
Homeowners, landlords, small businesses in England and Wales replacing fossil-fuel or electric heating. The grant is £7,500 for air and ground source heat pumps, and the installer applies for it on your behalf.
Loft and cavity insulation should be in place before or alongside a heat pump — it lets a smaller heat pump do the job and is required for funded schemes such as ECO4.
Most heat pumps on houses are permitted development, subject to size, siting and noise limits. Flats, listed buildings and some conservation areas can need consent — we check at survey.

Questions
An air source heat pump with emitters costs £10,000–£16,000 and a ground source heat pump £20,000–£35,000, before the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. If you're eligible, the grant would bring an air source heat pump to roughly £2,500–£8,500. Yes. An MCS heat pump installation needs a room-by-room heat loss calculation to size the heat pump and radiators. Ours costs £250–£650 by property size and is credited against your installation if you go ahead within 90 days.
Homeowners, landlords, small businesses in England and Wales replacing fossil-fuel or electric heating. The installer must be MCS certified and applies for the grant.
Sometimes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so some rooms may need larger radiators or underfloor heating. The room-by-room survey shows exactly which.
Usually, yes. Loft and cavity insulation reduce the heat your home needs, so a smaller heat pump can do the job — and funded schemes such as ECO4 require it.
