Overview
A ground source heat pump collects heat from pipes buried in your garden — in trenches or boreholes — where the temperature stays steady all year.
It's the most efficient type of heat pump for larger homes and rural properties with land, and qualifies for the same £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for eligible homes.
Heat from the ground, which stays stable through the year.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme for eligible homes in England and Wales.
The collector is buried; the heat pump sits indoors.
Zero-rated for homes until 31 March 2027.

Good to know
An MCS heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation (BS EN 12831) to size the heat pump and every radiator. Our heat loss survey costs £250–£650 depending on property size, and the fee is credited against your installation if you go ahead within 90 days.
Trenches need garden space; boreholes need access for a drilling rig. Both are assessed at survey.
Solar panels, batteries and heat pumps installed in homes in Great Britain are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027.
Every installation can go on an annual service plan, so it keeps running efficiently and stays within any manufacturer servicing conditions. Plans and prices are confirmed on request.

It depends on your home's heat loss. Horizontal trenches need a reasonable area of garden; boreholes need much less space but cost more to drill.
Ground source is more efficient but costs more to install (£20,000–£35,000 against £10,000–£16,000 for air source). Air source suits most homes; ground source suits larger homes with land.
